Mama’s Great 2023 Updated Bamboo Bread Slicer for Homemade Bread
This bread slicer replaces a plastic single cut slice guide. I kept getting inconsistent results from that slicer, and I didn’t like how the hard plastic treated the knife edge.
This product is made from wood and bamboo which is not only kinder to the knife blade, but also makes the loaf stay in place better than plastic does.
The width of the slicing floor can be set to three different widths, and one of them fits the loaf from my 9” X 5” bread pan perfectly. The slices come out perfectly every time. I like how the slicer is assembled for service and how it stores.
The one feature that sets this slicer apart from others that I have seen on Amazon is that it has only two slicing thickness – 1/3” and 1//2”. That allows more slices to be cut from the loaf before having to remove the existing slices and reposition the bread. The only improvement I would like is to have just one 1/3” inch width for the whole thing. Then you could do the whole loaf without rearranging anything. If you wanted a thicker slice, you could skip one or more spaces to get thicker bread. If 1/2” thickness is important I would like to see two sets of guides – 1/3” and 1/2”. You can see that I don’t want much.

I was looking for a more efficient way to slice my homemade bread for the kids’s lunch everyday and get even slices. This offers two different sizes and it is very simple to understand. It has a spot for storage underneath which is awesome. I also ordered an electric knife to make cutting even simpler.

I don’t believe I could cut my bread without this slicing guide! I love how solid and sturdy it feels and it assembles easily and stores itself compactly. The bamboo is beautiful and smooth. The cutting guides are just right. I like that it only has two different widths in the slats instead of three like most of the other slicing guides because it allows me to cut more slices in the size I want without moving the bread to match the slats. I can easily store it on its side in my cabinet between uses.
Additionally, it pairs well with the Mama’s Great serrated 10″ bread knife, which is also super easy to use and cuts the bread with ease. It is made from high carbon stainless steel and is very nice.
When I first received the cutting guide one of the slats had a defect and Mama’s Great customer service was extremely helpful and responsive when I contacted them and they sent me another one right away. I am sold on the Mama’s Great brand!
Finally, I leave you with this fun fact: If you’re a mom, one bonus benefit from using the Mama’s Great brand is the phrase “Mama’s Great” can be cut from the boxes and taped all over your kitchen reminding you and everyone in your family of how awesome you are! My husband did this for me and it was so encouraging. 😉

I originally spent much less on another slicer but immediately sent it back because I got what I paid for, it was a cheapy piece that didn’t work properly. So I did some research and decided I would rather spend a little more if it was a great slicer. Model 2 is a great slicer. I’ve had it for a couple months now and bake maybe a couple loaves a week. This slicer is worth it for many reasons. It is such a clever product! I love the way it easily stores its parts within itself making it very compact and easy to store. Then there’s the 2 thickness options, I use thin for sandwiches and thicker for dessert. My slices come out very neat and even. It’s also very sturdy and solid and nothing wobbles. The way it all fits together with the piece that holds the guides in place (the improvement from model 1) – so well designed. The wood itself is beautiful and the design is quite pretty. Easy to clean, since it just consists of turning it upside down and shaking over the sink and a quick wipe. BUT, that’s only half the reason why you should just get this slicer. The customer service is beyond anything I’ve experienced. They practically guarantee their products which means this is a BIFL (buy it for life) company. Their customer service was PROMPT and really went over and beyond to ensure my satisfaction when I had an issue. They completely stand behind their product and I just felt all warm and fuzzy after being treated so well as a customer. Even their packaging will put a smile on your face. It’s full of little touches that make you feel like these are great people and this is a good company with integrity. I will definitely be buying this slicer as gifts for the other bread makers in my life. I didn’t expect to be so moved by a bread slicer, but here I am, writing a long and passionate review lol. Do yourself a favor and just get this one.

This is a really nice bread slicer! The Model 2 is totally worth the upgrade. I would buy again when this one is worn out. Let me give you a few pros and cons:
Pros:
1. Nobody does Customer Service like Mama’s Great. This is a BIG ONE! I had a minor issue and sent an email to Mama’s Great. I had a replacement inside of 2 days. Amazon messed up and the replacement was a Model 1. Again I contacted Mama’s Great and in two more days I had the Model 2. Every company can error from time to time. Where the rubber meets the road is how they handle it when a mistake happens.
2. This slicer is perfect for what I need. As you can see in the picture, the medium setting is perfect for what I bake. I bake a 700 gram sourdough loaf using either a Camp Chef or Lodge cast-iron loaf pan. They fit perfectly!
3. If you bake sourdough, then you know that crumbs go everywhere when you slice the bread. I’ve used other slicers and had little luck catching the crumbs. I would guess that Mama’s catches 90+%. This keeps the kitchen floor clean and makes things easier to clean up. I can get away with some mess because the bread is so good.
4. It works! My family can now cut straight slices!
5. The grooved end piece gives much greater stability when using the slicer.
Now for a few Cons:
1. You need to be a bit innovative to get the first slice right. Now let’s be honest. Most of the time I only cut one slice. I have corresponded with Mama’s Great about this issue. I hope they make a few minor modifications. It would take their product up a level. It’s really good but really good can get better!
2. You do need to think about what you are doing. Keep the knife perpendicular to the cutting board. If you let it angle off you will cut into the slicing guides. Thinking when you have a sharp item in your hands is a GOOD THING!
